In Episode 3 of the Arnav Writes Series of Transit Analysis, we understand the modes of transport from the Capital of the United States - Washington DC to the Financial Capital of the United States - New York City. Let us compare various modes of transit such as driving yourself, taking a taxi, taking a bus, using the train or catching a flight between the two cities.
The Washington - New York transit corridor is one of the busiest travel corridors in the entire North American continent, with the highest population density of anywhere in the western hemisphere. The Interstate 95, along with Amtrak's rail tracks act as the most important travel corridor that connect the political and financial capital of one of the most powerful nations in the world.
A majority of the traffic passes through the I95, while several branch interstates also exist, having a prefix number, such as I295 or I495. On these roads we see several thousand vehicles heading down the road with mixed traffic sharing the same lanes. It may be trucks hauling food, intericity buses and cars hauling people mostly.
Being one of the busiest travel corridors in the US, let us analyze the best transit options for every category of traveller.
The US being a car dependent nation makes driving one of the most preferred options for travel which can be completed in a few hours. The Interstate 95, and its branch routes form a very reliable and good road network to be used.
Travel Time: ~4 to 5 hours under normal conditions; can easily exceed 6 hours during peak rush hours or holiday travel.
Cost: $40–$60+ in tolls (NJ Turnpike, Delaware bridges, etc.), plus gas. Parking in NYC or D.C. costs $40–$80/day. A private taxi or rideshare can cost $400–$700+.
Convenience: Door-to-door flexibility; ideal if traveling with extensive luggage, a family, or visiting destinations in the suburban outer rings.
Pros: Direct routing without transit station transfers, schedule autonomy, cost-effective if split among 3–4 passengers.
Cons: High stress from severe I-95 traffic, expensive tolls, and difficult/costly parking in both city centers.
This mode of transport is suited for individuals who need maximum flexibility, or individuals who may be transporting cycles, bags and have children/senior citizens with them.
With upto 35 Flight Departures in each direction, the flights dominate the category of reliability. Both Airports are convenientnly located near the city centers, and flighs offer various classes
However the flight loses in the context of overall cost and travel time, as Amtrak Acela or Northeast Regional provide travel upto 1 hour faster & in half the cost as prices may not fluctuate, and considers end to end costs.
Flights range from 200 to 320 US Dollars, whereas Amtrak Tickets start from 80 US Dollars.
This mode of transport is suited for travellers who may be arriving from a connecting flight, or those who may find it more convenient to use their airline points to book tickets for a lower cost, alongside corporate bookings.
Though self-drive & rail dominate this corridor, the buses on this route are highly popular for their affordable fares, starting from as little as 15$ and upto 90$ during peak season, which is a stark contrast to the 80$ base fare for Amtrak & 200$ base fare for a flight.
Buses are operated by a large number of companies, majority of services operated by Greyhound, FlixBus & Peterpan. Other operators include OurBus, BestBus, TripperBus & CoachBus. Travel Time takes around 4.5 to 5 Hours, and is a 365 KM journey one way.
This mode of transport is suited for budget conscious travellers & individuals who may be travelling alone, and are not in a hurry to reach their destination.
While Amtrak may have a bad reupation across the United States, it's strength is centered around the Northeast Corridor, as a cluster of metropolitan cities such as Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York & Boston are relatively close to each other. Trains also benefit with city center dropoffs, which eliminates first & last mile travel times.
Amtrak fares start at 80$ for Coach Class, going upto 455 US Dollars for First Class. Prices may fluctuare based on proximity to travel date.
This mode of transport is suited for every category of traveller, however this may not suit individuals who are time sensitive as trains may take slightly longer, and may be routinely affected by closures of the Hudson River Tunnels with little to no notice.
