Long back in 18th century when the three megacities, Washington DC, NYC and Boston were Booming and California was just became a state, The public transport industry was also booming but under many private companies. All people in the Boston Metropolitan Area loved the convenience of never getting late, they wanted to have it. So then the government unified all charter companies and formed MBTA- Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority.
They had control of everything and the right people took it the right way. Then in the 19th century, the Automobiles came and the car companies were planning to destroy every piece of public transport. But they couldn't do it in the Northeast States as the system in all the states were very diverse and was controlled by the government so they stayed as they are today.
