How UPS & FedEx move goods
The 2 freight giants next to each other
For customers, package is picked up at evening and reaches tommorow morning. It sounds simple but isn't very simple. Lets understand it better step-by-step.
Step 1: Book the parcel
The most imporant part is booking a parcel which can be done by their official website/app. It's very simple and convenient.
Step 2: Picked up or dropped off
Time to say bye to the parcel as it will either be picked up straight from your home or from one of the public places where they authorize to drop off packages.
Authorized drop-off locations.
Step 3: Off to the airport
All packages are bought to Memphis (FedEx) and Louisville (UPS) at midnight from origin city for them to be sorted and loaded onto another flight bound to their destination city.
Louisville (UPS)
UPS Worldport at Louisville Airport
Memphis (FedEx)
FedEx Global Hub at Memphis Airport
Step 4: All packages on the flight
Once all packages know which flight to board, they are loaded onto their flight and off they go. Both UPS & FedEx serve almost every US Major city and several international cities from SDF and MEM which are Seoul, Tokyo, London, Sydney, London, Paris, Cologne, Dubai.
Other cities like Bangalore and Delhi are served with one stop in Paris and Cologne.
Step 5: Unloading
Once all flights reach their destination airports, they are quickly unloaded and onto the delivery vans.
Step 6: At your destination
Ding dong! Your package is here. Most people are at work during delivery hours so the package sits at the doorstep till the homeowner gets home.
Other ways packages move
If you are booking a parcel which is not time precious, you take the slowest way; (everyone does it because it's cheap). To achieve a cost efficient method, they are loaded onto trains which are operated by BNSF, Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific.
