The Namma Metro or simply Bangalore Metro is the secondary mode of transport in the city of Bangalore. This one of the MRT systems of India. This has a Daily Ridership of 518000 and a 134 Million as an Annual ridership.

History

The Metro was first proposed in 1977 when migration and many other factors bought a population increase. After that the buses were launched. Soon after the buses could not handle the passenger capacity. Soon IT conquered the city and the population went over 7 million.

In 2003, the Government of Karnataka contacted the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which had successfully developed the Delhi Metro, to carry out a detailed preparation study for a metro in Bangalore, to be done emulating the technical and financial aspects of the approach used in Delhi. The study recommended a 2-line metro, 18 km and 15 km in length, cross shaped.

The middle of the cross was to be at the Central Railway Station in Bangalore (Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna National Rail Station ),  completely underground. The economic rate-of-return was forecast at 22.3%. The financial forecast assumes a government subsidy for interest payments and some depreciation, i.e. fare revenue will cover somewhat more than direct operating costs. The Government accepted this option. BMRTL ceased to exist and was replaced by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).

Construction

Phase 1

The two lines were built as per what the survey and study had said. This was a success as almost 10% of the Bangalore

traffic went elevated. One of the benefits were

1)Less Road Congestion

2)Less Bus Traffic

3)Time efficiency (Metro not stuck in traffic)

4)Affordability

Phase 2

Recently the Bangalore Metro went a huge extension and 2 new lines. On 3 January 2012, the Karnataka government approved a

budget of ₹27,000 crore (US$3.8 billion) for Phase 2 of Namma Metro project. Phase 2 is estimated to cost ₹26,405 crore

 (US$3.7 billion).
