Amrit Bharat Express

The Amrit Bharat Express is the newest series of trains on the Indian Railways. This is a non-ac version of the Vande Bharat express which is made for the low income general public who travels in the Sleeper & General Coaches of Trains. These trains have many purposes such as faster travel for the non-ac trains & helping reduce the already super crowded trains.

There are currently 2 Amrit Bharat routes in India and these trains on those routes are completely booked, despite them having an unusual seating capacity of more than 1500 Passengers in 22 Sleeper/Unreserved Coaches. These trains only have 1 trainset which is why these trains run either 2 times a week or weekly.

Why was this train needed?

This train is a lifesaver for Indian Railways, I say this because of the most common problem that is found in every train in India, which is Overcrowding in the non-ac coaches.

While many people now choose flights for actual time saving & for showoffs (for short distances) & others use their own vehicles, most of the country still uses the Indian Railways to travel intercity & within a city. For the lower income public, they can not afford any other mode of transport except for trains, this is why trains continue to remain to be full beyond capacity.

The Indian Railways did not do any major change to solve this problem apart from adding festival trains or worse, removing non-ac coaches in favor for AC coaches since they made more revenue. This is why, the Indian Railways first came up with a solution for the middle class families who prefer to travel by train which rolled out on 15th Feb 2019 now known as the Vande Bharat Express.

As of the time of this articles publishing, there are 41 Vande Bharat Trains, every state having at least 1 & every metropolitan & tier 2 city having minimum 3 Vande Bharat Trains.

Now the Railways had given the middle class public a reliable option for the middle class public. Now it was time to come up with something for the lower class public, who was also the largest section of users of Indian Railways, winning them meant a big success for the railways. This is why, they came up with the solution for the lower class public, known as the Amrit Bharat Express.

Launch of the train

While the Railway officials kept quiet until they could decide where to start it, the indian public on social media kept posting updates about the train and taking pictures of it wherever it went, whether it's Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra or Gujurat, everybody had live info about the unlaunched train.

At first, it was speculated that it could start either between Delhi-Mumbai or Delhi-Darbhanga. It took a long time for the railway officials to spread the word that the Amrit Bharat train will be starting on 2 routes, which are:

1)Delhi-Ayodhya-Darbhanga

2) Malda Town-Balasore-Vizag-Bengaluru.

After a long wait, it was finally announced that on 30th December 2023 from Ayodhya Cantt Junction, the honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji will be flagging off 6 New Vande Bharat trains & 2 New Amrit Bharat Trains. On the day of launch & afterwards, there was a mad craze to get a ticket on the Amrit Bharat train & get a picture of it.

The Interiors of the Amrit Bharat Express, they have a cream & purple livery across the seats and have a very clean look as compared to other sleeper coaches. These coaches also have more features as compared to the normal sleeper coaches.

Future of Indian Trains

The future of Indian Railways looks bright since newer trains have entered the network. With the Vande Bharat covering the middle class public & the Amrit Bharat covering the lower class public, the major problem with Indian Trains seems to be on the decline, which is good news to hear. We can expect more & more Vande & Amrit Bharat Trains as the Civil Aviation minister had announced "4500 Vande Bharat Trains by the year 2047".
